An Engineering Manager role leading a team within SumUp's Payments Tribe (Sofia, office-first), the foundational product powering secure, scalable card-present and card-not-present payment processing across 36+ markets. The role partners with Product and Business to scale the backend systems behind SumUp's global payments engine processing millions of transactions daily.
Responsibilities
- ▹Shape technical direction as part of the Payments leadership team and influence long-term strategy
- ▹Take ownership of technical delivery: define goals, drive design and architecture, ensure quality execution
- ▹Grow and support your team with coaching, feedback, and structured performance development
- ▹Promote cross-functional alignment across engineering, product, and business teams
- ▹Manage shifting priorities and context-switching across multiple teams or domains
- ▹Contribute hands-on by reviewing designs and code and solving complex backend challenges
Requirements
- ▹Deep backend engineering experience with distributed systems, APIs, and databases
- ▹Experience managing engineering teams in complex, multi-technology environments, ideally fintech
- ▹Ability to manage multiple domains or teams with different focus areas
- ▹Clear, effective communicator able to simplify technical topics and build alignment
- ▹Data- and metrics-driven decision-making to monitor system health and improve delivery
- ▹Empathetic, clear leadership developing people through scale or change
Nice to have
- ▹Experience with Go and cloud-native environments (preferably AWS)
