An Engineering Manager role leading SumUp's Verification squad, responsible for identity checks (KYC/KYB) across all of SumUp's markets in a complex, regulated domain. The role involves modernising legacy-heavy systems into observable, maintainable, resilient platforms while collaborating closely with Product, Compliance, and Operations.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Lead the Verification Squad, removing bottlenecks and managing cross-team dependencies
  • ▹Partner with Product, Compliance, and Operations to translate KYC/KYB requirements into engineering outcomes
  • ▹Drive technical and organisational improvements, reducing legacy overhead and improving tooling
  • ▹Shape roadmap priorities with the PM, accounting for compliance and AI-influenced features
  • ▹Maintain high standards for observability, controlled failures, and auditability including AI components
  • ▹Develop engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, and stretch opportunities

Requirements

  • ▹Proven track record of leading engineering teams through technical transformation and legacy modernisation
  • ▹Strong technical depth in backend technologies, particularly Go and API/integration architecture
  • ▹Hands-on experience with observability, CI/CD, and testing practices
  • ▹Experience (or a strong appetite to learn) in KYC/KYB regulatory environments and frameworks like eIDAS
  • ▹Combines strategic thinking with hands-on technical credibility
  • ▹Communicates with clarity, empathy, and transparency
