Lead Software Engineer

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 UK - Remote

Faculty is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to spearhead backend and edge/IoT engineering for high-stakes Defence projects, implementing scalable, future-proof patterns as both a technical authority and mentor.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a dedicated squad of engineers to ensure delivery of high-quality, scalable software
  • Design and build complex components of client deliverables across backend and edge/IoT domains
  • Implement robust CI/CD processes and containerisation strategies using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Ship production-ready code in Python and compiled languages such as Rust, C++, or Go
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate advanced AI and Machine Learning capabilities into software architectures
  • Distill complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in application development and deep understanding of modern system architecture and design patterns
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one compiled language, with a proven track record shipping code to paying customers
  • Strong hands-on experience with DevOps tools, including GitLab CI/CD, Docker, and deployment on bare metal or Kubernetes
  • Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC), willingness to work 2-4 days per week on-site with defence customers

This role sits within the Defence team, which builds AI solutions for the defence sector; it requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC) and 2-4 days per week on-site with defence clients, with the flexibility to work from Faculty's London office or remotely elsewhere in the UK the rest of the time.
