
Engineering Manager - Ubuntu Core
Canonical is hiring a technical Engineering Manager to redefine the embedded Linux experience with Ubuntu Core, the smallest, most secure and most reliable operating system in the IoT market. The role leads a team of strong software developers building Ubuntu Core system software across CPU architectures such as ARM, RISC-V and x86, including reliable device recovery mechanisms for fleets of heterogeneous appliances. The manager meets stakeholders, prioritises requests, plans the roadmap and ensures delivery, while shaping culture and strategy. It combines deep technical skill with the ability to inspire and grow people.

- ▹Build and lead a distributed team through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback and career development
- ▹Demonstrate sound engineering principles by directly contributing toward team goals
- ▹Coach and mentor team members with hands-on career development
- ▹Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders
- ▹Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices
- ▹Help develop and evangelise great engineering and organisational practices

- ▹Actively participate in the leadership team and collaborate with other leaders
Requirements
- ▹Demonstrated competencies in embedded software development
- ▹Strong skills in Golang, C++ and Shell
- ▹Solid understanding of Linux and a modern GNU/Linux distribution (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- ▹Love for developing and growing people, with a track record of doing it
- ▹Demonstrated ability to plan and execute delivery of high-quality software on time
- ▹Solid experience working in an agile development environment
- ▹Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- ▹Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative narrative
- ▹Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
Nice to have
- ▹Familiarity with an immutable Linux distribution, preferably Ubuntu Core
- ▹Experience with multiple CPU architectures such as ARM and RISC-V
- ▹Experience with Linux native containerisation and security
