Lead Data Scientist - Telematics

Data Scientist • Lead • On-site • Full-time United Kingdom London, United Kingdom

Zego's Telematics team is looking for a Lead Data Scientist to turn raw phone sensor data (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) into behavioural features and risk signals that power fairer insurance pricing.

Responsibilities

  • Work with raw, high-frequency sensor data (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) at scale, processing more than 250k trips per day
  • Research new behavioural features and detection algorithms
  • Design and build behavioural features and factors that feed the understanding of driving quality, context, and risk
  • Take ideas from hypothesis to production: prototyping in notebooks, then writing production-grade Python and SQL
  • Prioritise simple, robust solutions, rule-based when sufficient, ML when warranted
  • Lead experiments, validate impact with data, and automate insight generation
  • Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and actuaries to get features into the pricing path and measure their effect
  • Translate complex sensor data into clear findings for non-technical stakeholders

Requirements

  • MSc (or integrated MEng/MSc) in a quantitative field: Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or similar
  • Working knowledge of digital signal processing or sensor physics, reasoning about noise, sampling, filtering, and signal meaning
  • Proven track record delivering data science or data engineering projects into production
  • Strong Python and SQL (Snowflake)
  • Comfortable with the scientific Python stack: Polars, Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn
  • Experience developing and evaluating ML models on tabular data (classification or regression)
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines from scratch, reliably and at scale
  • Fluent with AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code) as part of daily engineering work
  • Strong communicator
