Software Engineer - SONiC

Responsibilities

• ▹Write functional and design specifications for system software that manages hardware components
• ▹Independently implement solutions to small problems in C, C++ and Python
• ▹Write test plan specifications and implement automated test programs
• ▹Debug and fix problems found by the automated tests
• ▹Work in a team on larger routing protocol problems
• ▹Analyze problems in customer networks with Customer Support Engineers and deliver fixes as new releases or patches
• ▹Work with System Test Engineers to fix problems found in their tests
• ▹Mentor new and junior engineers
• ▹Review and contribute to specifications and implementations by team members and the SONiC community
• ▹Create an implementation and debugging schedule, update it weekly and report it to the project lead
• ▹Work with the marketing team to understand requirements and upstream code and test changes to the SONiC community

Requirements

• ▹BSc, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 2+ years of related post-graduate work experience
• ▹Knowledge of C, C++ and/or Python
• ▹Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
• ▹Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• ▹Ability to solve a small problem independently and work in a small team on a medium-sized problem with limited oversight
• ▹Applied understanding of software engineering principles

Nice to have

• ▹Understanding of L2/L3 networking in at least one area: IP routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, PIM) or Layer 2 features (802.1d bridging, Spanning Tree, 802.1ax LACP, 802.1AB LLDP, RFC 1812)
• ▹Ability to use, test and debug a packet forwarding engine and vendor-provided hardware software libraries
• ▹Knowledge of infrastructure functions for distributed systems: messaging, signaling, databases, command line interfaces
• ▹Hands-on experience developing ethernet bridging or routing software or distributed systems software
• ▹Experience with enterprise or service provider class Ethernet switch/router system software, or significant PhD-level research in network routing and packet forwarding
