Software Engineer - Linux Kernel

Arista's Linux Kernel team develops and maintains the Linux kernel in EOS, working with the upstream community. The engineer builds new kernel features and brings up support for new CPUs in Arista products.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Track ongoing developments in the Linux kernel and identify features of interest to Arista
  • ▹Develop and maintain EOS kernel features and tests in C, C++ and Python, and review and contribute to functional and design specifications
  • ▹Build automated tests and test infrastructure to validate features
  • ▹Work with hardware engineers and vendors to qualify new kernel-dependent components such as CPUs and NICs
  • ▹Contribute features back to the mainline kernel with the kernel community
  • ▹Integrate new kernel versions into EOS with the team of kernel engineers
  • ▹Provide technical leadership across features, projects and tools
  • ▹Analyze, mitigate and fix problems in customer networks with Customer Support Engineers
  • ▹Analyze and fix problems found by System Test Engineers
  • ▹Mentor new and junior engineers

Requirements

  • ▹BSc, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 3+ years of related post-graduate experience
  • ▹Expert knowledge of and extensive experience programming in C
  • ▹Significant hands-on experience troubleshooting, fixing bugs and developing features in the Linux kernel
  • ▹Familiarity with Linux kernel architecture, design and implementation
  • ▹Familiarity with the upstream Linux community's patching process
  • ▹Understanding of IP networking architecture, design and principles
  • ▹Applied understanding of modern software engineering principles and practices
  • ▹Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • ▹Strong software design and implementation skills
  • ▹Familiarity with x86 and ARM CPU architectures

Nice to have

  • ▹Knowledge of C++ and Python
