Lead Data Scientist

Data Engineer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 UK - Remote

Faculty is looking for a Lead Data Scientist to take on a pivotal, entrepreneurial role as technical expert, setting direction and ensuring high-quality, scalable delivery of its most challenging, high-impact projects.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for complex, business-critical projects, balancing trade-offs between speed, innovation, and reliability
  • Design and implement reliable, production-grade technical solutions, with comprehensive documentation of architectures and specifications
  • Define project problems, develop clear roadmaps, and oversee end-to-end delivery across multi-disciplinary workstreams
  • Lead technical scoping and feasibility studies for high-value sales opportunities and strategic customer engagements
  • Manage relationships and communications with demanding clients, fostering trust and aligning solutions with long-term commercial goals
  • Drive adoption of best practices, shared resources, and robust technical processes across the Data Science craft
  • Mentor and develop other data scientists and team members

Requirements

  • Depth of expertise in at least one machine learning domain and strong technical breadth across the data science landscape
  • Skilled technical leader, proficient in mentoring individuals, managing teams (including other managers), and rolling out impactful tools
  • Proven project management expertise, dividing complex, ill-defined problems into actionable workstreams with defensible timelines
  • Adept at managing ill-defined, high-risk tasks, delivering innovative and practical outcomes under commercial pressure
  • Strong customer leadership skills, acting as a trusted technical advisor to demanding clients
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Commercial (BD), and Infrastructure teams
  • Experience extending technical oversight to business unit-level initiatives

This role sits within the Defence team, which builds AI solutions for the defence sector; it requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC) and 2-4 days per week on-site with defence clients, with the flexibility to work from Faculty's London office or remotely elsewhere in the UK the rest of the time.
