Staff Backend Engineer - Second Horizon | Canada | Remote

Responsibilities

• ▹Build the first services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, and system administration
• ▹Help define a scalable, multi-tenant SaaS foundation: tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs
• ▹Build APIs and service interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal apps to retrieve relevant context
• ▹Make practical tradeoffs between fast experimentation and long-term reliability
• ▹Instrument and operate services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards
• ▹Contribute to technical direction: architecture, service boundaries, API contracts

Requirements

• ▹Solid experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems
• ▹Practical AI experience - familiar with AI technologies and frameworks, focused on real-world quality
• ▹Comfortable with quick iteration and experimentation, releasing prototypes and gathering feedback
• ▹Proven initiative, comfortable dealing with ambiguity
• ▹Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and building GenAI-powered applications
• ▹Proven track record shipping software into production that's actively used
• ▹Exposure to cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• ▹Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior

Nice to have

• ▹Experience building or working with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows
• ▹Experience as a data analyst or working with data platforms (Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Snowflake, Databricks)
• ▹Experience building tools for data engineering
