An Engineering Manager role for SumUp's Edge AI team (Berlin, office-first), leading a cross-functional team of engineers and ML specialists building LLM-powered and agentic AI systems for merchants. A key focus is migrating the AI assistant to an autonomous agentic setup while setting technical direction across quality, latency, and cost.
Responsibilities
- ▹Lead day-to-day execution of the Edge AI team, translating product vision into sprint roadmaps
- ▹Own the migration of the AI assistant to an autonomous agentic setup across merchant channels
- ▹Set technical direction for LLM-powered system design with clear tradeoffs
- ▹Build a data-informed engineering culture by defining metrics and tracking delivery velocity
- ▹Hire, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and ML specialists, including interns
Requirements
- ▹Strong hands-on background in ML/AI engineering or data science, leading teams delivering production AI
- ▹Deep knowledge of LLM-powered system design (RAG, embeddings, tool/function calling, orchestration like LangChain or LlamaIndex)
- ▹Proficiency in Python and core AI/ML libraries (PyTorch, HuggingFace Transformers) with LLMOps/MLOps and CI/CD
- ▹Proven track record of launching AI features end-to-end in production
- ▹Ability to lead with clarity, empathy, and accountability while managing stakeholders
