Engineering Manager

Responsibilities

• ▹Own the team's technical vision end to end, not just execute someone else's roadmap; create an ambitious roadmap in partnership with the product team
• ▹Define what great looks like and refuse to settle for less
• ▹Sit at the table with the CTO to shape strategy, product bets and the roadmap for a business area that is still being invented
• ▹Sit on the engineering leadership team, beyond your own team's edge
• ▹Lead the charge on AI adoption: find where it changes how we build, ship and operate, and make it real
• ▹Hire and grow people who make the team sharper, not just bigger
• ▹Coach your teammates to help them reach their full potential
• ▹Set unmistakable expectations and hold people to them with empathy and firmness
• ▹Delegate real ownership, not just tasks
• ▹Push back on the CTO, stakeholders and plans that do not hold up, in a way that builds trust
• ▹Build relationships people rely on across engineering, product and leadership
• ▹Redesign for speed, reliability and broader coverage, evolving from controlling individual devices to optimizing the entire home

Requirements

• ▹3+ years managing engineers, and you love it
• ▹Values you will not compromise, even when it costs you something; you can tell us what they are
• ▹Driven and ambitious: you push for hard goals and hold a high bar for yourself and everyone around you
• ▹Good instincts for when to keep it simple and when a clever solution is worth the complexity
• ▹Led remote, distributed teams and know what holds people together at a distance
• ▹Think past your own team, comfortable shaping decisions at the engineering leadership-team level
• ▹Built AI products that have contributed meaningfully to the team's success
• ▹Do your best work with stakeholders in the room
• ▹Strong opinions, loosely held: you will fight for a position and drop it the moment the evidence says you are wrong
• ▹Genuine interest in the energy shift, this problem specifically and not just management as a craft
• ▹Proactive: you spot the problem before anyone asks and find ways to fix it
• ▹People do better work around you, and you can tell us about past mistakes and what they taught you
