Lead Machine Learning Engineer

Faculty is looking for a Lead Machine Learning Engineer to spearhead the technical direction and delivery of complex, innovative AI projects, acting as a technical expert from AI strategy through to client-side deployments.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for complex ML projects, balancing trade-offs and guiding team priorities
  • Design, implement, and maintain reliable, scalable ML/software systems, justifying key architectural decisions
  • Define project problems, develop roadmaps, and oversee delivery across multiple workstreams in ill-defined, high-risk environments
  • Drive development of shared resources and libraries across the organisation, guiding other engineers to contribute
  • Lead hiring processes, make informed selection decisions, and mentor multiple individuals to foster team growth
  • Proactively develop and execute recommendations for adopting new technologies and ways of working
  • Act as a technical expert and coach for customers, accurately estimating and defending large work-streams

Requirements

  • A technical expert among peers, capable of going deep on particular topics with breadth of knowledge to solve almost any problem
  • Strong Python skills and practical experience operationalising models using frameworks like Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
  • Expert in at least one major Cloud Solution Provider (Azure, GCP, AWS), with experience leading teams building full-stack web applications
  • Hands-on experience with containerisation tools like Docker and orchestration via Kubernetes
  • Able to successfully manage and coach a team of engineers, setting team-wide development goals
  • Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC), willingness to work 2-4 days per week on-site with defence customers

This role sits within the Defence team, which builds AI solutions for the defence sector; it requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC) and 2-4 days per week on-site with defence clients, with the flexibility to work from Faculty's London office or remotely elsewhere in the UK the rest of the time.
