Responsibilities

• ▹Own and develop the platform infrastructure strategy, with matching sponsorship and responsibility: map out needs, make the calls, own outcomes
• ▹Be directly involved in deciding what the team works on and how
• ▹Make principled build vs. buy assessments and advocate for the right tools for the right job
• ▹Create and maintain comprehensive internal documentation and decision records for systems and processes
• ▹Participate in architectural forums and make principled, open decisions
• ▹Shape what Astronomer's products Astro, Observe and the IDE are capable of over the next several years

Requirements

• ▹Distributed systems depth grounded in practice: consistency and availability tradeoffs, failure cascades, backpressure, graceful degradation
• ▹NALSD thinking as a natural approach to new system design
• ▹Kubernetes at operator depth: knowing what happens inside the scheduler and control loop when things go wrong, having operated clusters under real load
• ▹Strong Go proficiency: the platform team writes production Go and the candidate has built and shipped systems in it
• ▹Real multi-cloud experience: considered architectural decisions across AWS, GCP and/or Azure, lived with in production
• ▹Experience defining requirements and driving technology choices across an engineering organization
• ▹Strong written and verbal communication: writing design docs and postmortems
• ▹Experience working in a globally-distributed team

Nice to have

• ▹Experience with storage primitives at the system level, reasoning about relational vs. object stores based on real failures
• ▹Experience working on a SaaS/PaaS product across multiple cloud providers
• ▹Familiarity with Apache Airflow or workflow orchestration systems
