Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Platform Engineer • Senior • Remote • Full-time • European Union EU/EMEA

Buffer is looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join a small, high-leverage platform team that runs the system every Buffer engineer ships on. The role is about reliability, building developer tools as products, and modernizing the foundation.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Own the day-to-day reliability of the production platform: keep EKS, ArgoCD and the AWS surface area stable, tune autoscaling, and handle incidents so each one teaches something new.
  • ▹Build progressive delivery with Argo Rollouts and clean rollback paths, so a bad deploy can be reverted within seconds to minutes.
  • ▹Build developer tools as products: evolve the local development environment, BIBEs (per-PR full-stack staging deployments) and CLI tooling so the inner loop stays fast and friendly to parallel AI agents.
  • ▹Reduce operational toil with AI by automating low-risk workflows end to end.
  • ▹Keep the stack current: upgrade application runtimes (Node.js, Python), Kubernetes, EKS, Helm and the Terraform-managed surface, and own infra-side security vulnerabilities.
  • ▹Improve the economics of the platform: lead visibility work on Datadog, AWS rightsizing and log filters so observability and cloud spend grow slower than the company.
  • ▹Partner with EPD (Buffer's unified Engineering, Product and Design team): documentation, weekly security work and shared ownership of infrastructure. On-call is distributed across all engineers, a week-long shift roughly once a quarter.

Requirements

  • ▹Enough experience as an Infrastructure Engineer, SRE, DevOps or adjacent role to be considered senior.
  • ▹Hands-on experience operating production Kubernetes at scale on a managed offering (GKE, EKS, AKS), including authoring Helm charts, and fluency with KEDA and the cluster autoscaler.
  • ▹AWS depth across IAM, EC2, S3, SQS, ECR and ALBs.
  • ▹Strong Terraform skills with modular, readable, self-contained code.
  • ▹Production CI/CD with GitHub Actions (or equivalent) and GitOps via ArgoCD, including canary or progressive delivery systems.
  • ▹Experience building internal developer tools (CLIs, dev environments, per-PR environments) and treating them as products.
  • ▹A track record of pragmatic build-vs-buy decisions on infrastructure tooling.
  • ▹Experience with DataDog, Sentry or similar observability stacks, designing logs and metrics with cost in mind.
  • ▹Comfort with Cloudflare (Workers, Zero Trust, DNS).
  • ▹Ability to read and modify TypeScript or Node services to upgrade runtimes (legacy PHP and Python show up too).
  • ▹Fluency with modern AI tools for debugging, documenting and reducing toil.
  • ▹A proactive, follow-through mindset; you turn ambiguous asks into rough proofs of concept and iterate.
  • ▹Comfort working in remote, asynchronous environments.

Nice to have

  • ▹A contributed open-source Terraform module.
  • ▹Experience with Cloudflare and GCP (BigQuery).
  • ▹Open-source contributions, a technical blog, conference talks or side projects.
  • ▹Developer-facing tooling you have shipped (APIs, SDKs, CLIs, MCP servers) where adoption was the success metric.
