Master's Thesis: UX Design for AI-Powered Digital Twins

Fraunhofer ISST (Dortmund) offers a master's thesis opportunity on UX design for the "Open Factory Twin" (OFacT), an AI-powered digital twin framework. The goal is to make the user interface for model generation, scenario analysis and model adaptation more transparent and trustworthy in manufacturing and logistics applications.

Stack

Responsibilities

  • Literature and tool research on user guidance, human-AI interaction, Explainable AI and digital twin design
  • Analyzing the existing OFacT prototype in terms of user guidance, comprehensibility, transparency and usability
  • Identifying relevant user roles, usage scenarios and decision points
  • Developing a user-guidance concept for model generation, scenario analysis and model adaptation
  • Designing wireframes, user flows and interaction concepts
  • Evaluating the concept against a practical Industry 4.0 use case

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master's program in computer science, business informatics, HCI, UX design, interaction design, media informatics or a comparable field
  • Interest in user-centered design, digital twins, Industry 4.0 and AI-supported systems
  • First experience with UX methods (user flows, wireframes, personas, journey maps, usability analysis)
  • Ability to work independently on scientific work, analytical and solution-oriented approach
  • Good spoken and written German and English

Nice to have

  • Experience with tools such as Figma, Miro, Adobe XD or Balsamiq
