Lead Firmware Engineer

Eaton's ES AMER PCS division is hiring a Lead Firmware Engineer to design firmware for the electronic trip units used in Power Components Division circuit breakers. This hybrid role, based out of Moon Township, PA (Pittsburgh), owns embedded software covering hardware drivers, protection, metering, communication, power electronics, and user interface.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, integration, and testing of embedded firmware for microcontroller-based products.
  • Contribute to firmware architecture and design decisions while providing technical leadership within project teams.
  • Plan and coordinate firmware development tasks with robust, trackable execution plans.
  • Participate in formal design, code, and quality reviews, giving constructive feedback to peers.
  • Mentor and support other engineers in firmware design, development, debugging, and testing.
  • Develop reliable, maintainable, reusable firmware components in C/C++, using RTOS and embedded communication protocols.
  • Perform technical investigations and root cause analysis to resolve product, manufacturing, and field issues.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, quality, cybersecurity, manufacturing, and test engineering teams.
  • Support firmware verification, validation, and system-level testing.
  • Develop and maintain automated test tools, verification suites, and stress-testing capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years leading firmware development activities and contributing to firmware architecture/design decisions.
  • Minimum 7 years of hands-on embedded firmware/software development, including multi-controller systems in C/C++.
  • Demonstrated proficiency architecting and implementing embedded firmware across RTOS-based and bare-metal environments.
  • Strong capability with embedded peripherals and interfaces: ADC, PWM, UART, SPI, I2C, DMA, GPIO, and interrupt-driven systems.
  • Proven experience debugging complex hardware-software integration and system-level issues.

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and maintainable embedded frameworks.
  • Experience with source control systems and collaborative development workflows.
  • Hands-on unit, white-box, black-box, integration, and automated regression testing experience.
  • Working knowledge of embedded cybersecurity principles, secure development, and functional safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with multitasking firmware concepts, preferably Zephyr RTOS or similar RTOS.
  • Experience with safety-critical product development and standards such as UL and IEC.
  • Experience developing automation/test tools in Python, Bash, or similar scripting languages.
  • Proven debugging experience with JTAG, SWD, ICE, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Experience developing firmware for power distribution, circuit protection, or industrial control products.
  • Familiarity with current sensing technologies: Rogowski coils, current transformers (CTs), shunt-based sensing, and signal conditioning.
  • Experience implementing protection algorithms and real-time monitoring (overcurrent, short-circuit, ground fault, thermal).

Soft skills

Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and verbal/written communication skills.Ability to provide technical guidance and mentor peers.Strong problem-solving skills with a data-driven engineering approach.Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and hardware designs.Proficiency with technical documentation, requirements management, and tools such as Atlassian Confluence and Jira.

What we offer

  • Expected annual salary range of $97,000–$143,000.
