Senior Digital Engineering Manager

Engineering Manager • Senior • On-site • Full-time Hungary Budapest, Hungary

Budapest-based leadership role owning Wizz Air's EDGE and Perimeter Engineering domain, with primary accountability for DNS, CDN, Bot Protection and related perimeter services on AWS, ensuring secure, resilient and high-performance global access to Wizz Air's digital platforms. The role leads a dedicated EDGE engineering team, defines and evolves the technology stack, plans and executes engineering roadmaps, and reports to the Head of Engineering and Architecture within the Digital organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure technology decisions continue to support a rapid growth trajectory
  • Establish governance and frameworks for measuring current status and roadmap progress
  • Establish and implement engineering principles and standards across the teams
  • Coordinate Wizz Air's current flagship digital project: migrating the website to a cloud native architecture while transforming the organisation
  • Manage the engineering effort for the website and the apps
  • Coordinate regular training sessions for business users
  • Perform assessments and benchmarking across the engineering teams
  • Manage the internal engineering managers
  • Directly manage 50+ external resources
  • Manage budget, time and developer resources
  • Manage multiple vendors and participate in IT tenders
  • Own the yearly and quarterly budgeting process
  • Form and manage the engineering strategy
  • Actively seek opportunities and embrace the ideation process

Requirements

  • 5-7+ years of overall IT/engineering experience, with 5+ years in cloud or network-centric engineering roles
  • 4+ years in engineering leadership or people management roles
  • Proven experience leading DNS, CDN, WAF, Bot Protection or EDGE platforms at scale
  • Experience working with global, highly available, internet-facing systems
  • Strong hands-on and architectural knowledge of DNS technologies (authoritative DNS, traffic steering, health checks)
  • Deep understanding of CDN concepts: caching strategies, origin protection, performance optimization, TLS and global traffic routing
  • Experience with Bot Protection, WAF and DDoS mitigation concepts and tooling
  • Strong expertise in AWS EDGE and networking services: Route 53, CloudFront, AWS Shield, AWS WAF and related services
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, HTTP/S, TLS, Anycast, latency-based routing
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation) and automation
  • Familiarity with monitoring, observability and incident response in distributed systems
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken
