Senior Software Engineer

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 UK - Remote

Faculty is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Defence business unit, leading backend and edge/IoT engineering for critical work streams and bridging machine learning research with production-grade software.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build robust backend and edge/IoT components for diverse client deliverables across multiple software domains
  • Scope and execute bounded technical problems to ensure high-velocity delivery
  • Ship production-ready code in Python and at least one compiled language such as Rust, C++, Go, C#, or Java
  • Implement scalable CI/CD processes, containerisation with Docker, and deployments on Kubernetes or bare metal
  • Mentor and pair with fellow engineers to share best practices
  • Collaborate with Machine Learning and Data Science teams to operationalise agentic software and advanced AI tooling

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience in application development and a solid understanding of modern system architecture and design
  • Proven track record of shipping code used by paying customers in both Python and a compiled language
  • Highly skilled in DevOps practices, including GitLab CI/CD, Docker, and managing applications in production
  • Experience with agentic software development
  • Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC), willingness to work 2-4 days per week on-site with defence customers

This role sits within the Defence team, which builds AI solutions for the defence sector; it requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC) and 2-4 days per week on-site with defence clients, with the flexibility to work from Faculty's London office or remotely elsewhere in the UK the rest of the time.
