Head of Software Engineering

Responsibilities

• ▹Own the engineering roadmap: decide what to build, what to defer and what to kill
• ▹Set technical direction and architecture across frontend, backend, data pipelines and lab-hardware integration
• ▹Ship code yourself on the highest-leverage problems, not just review it
• ▹Hire, grow and set the bar for a team that ships fast and holds quality high
• ▹Turn the team's AI-assisted development practices into a genuine speed advantage
• ▹Translate company strategy into engineering priorities and make sure the right things get built in the right order

Requirements

• ▹Has shipped production software for years and wants to keep building while leading
• ▹Has built teams at least once before: hired, managed and developed engineers, in a startup or high-growth environment
• ▹Has owned or significantly shaped an engineering roadmap, making pragmatic tradeoffs that keep things shipping and stop projects from growing out of scope
• ▹Technical breadth: good architectural decisions across frontend, backend, data and infrastructure, and knows when to go deep versus delegate
• ▹AI-native: already builds with AI agents and coding tools as a force multiplier and has a real point of view on how they change team structure, tooling and workflow
• ▹A genuine interest in biology (no background required)
• ▹High autonomy, founder mindset
