Senior Engineering Manager, Data & AI Products

Data Engineer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 United Kingdom

A leadership role spanning Pleo's two newest teams — Data & AI Products and Data Serving — combining data and engineering leadership with a strong product backbone to deliver customer-facing AI features and a reliable data serving layer.

Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and develop multidisciplinary teams as a hands-on builder; Data & AI Products includes Applied AI Engineers, Data Scientists, and ML Scientists, while Data Serving includes Backend Engineers, Data Platform Engineers, and Data Engineers
  • Own delivery for both teams: AI feature delivery for customers and the API/serving layer that underpins it
  • Partner with product teams to define the AI feature roadmap
  • Drive quality and trust standards across AI feature development: evaluation methodologies, production monitoring, responsible AI practices
  • Ensure the serving layer meets the reliability and latency requirements of production AI features, product teams, and external customers
  • Manage resourcing and hiring across both teams through a period of growth
  • Represent both teams in leadership and cross-functional discussions, translating technical progress and blockers into clear decisions
  • Partner with the Manager of GenAI Platform to ensure product demand shapes the platform roadmap

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams building AI-powered or data-intensive customer-facing products
  • Technical depth in at least one of: AI product engineering, real-time reporting/analytics data APIs, or ML systems
  • Experience building or substantially growing teams, hiring, developing, and retaining senior technical talent in a competitive market
  • Strong product and business acumen: able to shape a roadmap with PMs and designers, not just execute one handed to you
  • Track record shipping with quality under velocity pressure (AI features and production APIs both carry high trust requirements)
  • Comfortable managing across distinct team mandates with different profiles, stakeholders, and rhythms
  • Experience scaling teams from 0 to 1 in ambiguous environments

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the tech stack: AWS, Kotlin, Python, Kubernetes, LiteLLM, BrainTrust, Temporal, LLM APIs
