Engineering Manager (Claims)

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 New York City

Headway is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Claims Platform team, owning the reliability of the insurance claim submission, response processing, and recording pipeline.

Stack

Responsibilities

  • Lead an engineering team: hire to a high bar, grow the team, set the culture
  • Co-own the Claims Platform roadmap with the product partner
  • Set technical direction: architecture decisions, build-vs-buy trade-offs, reliability targets
  • Partner cross-functionally with the insurance group and adjacent teams (Claims Success, Billing Infrastructure, data platform)
  • Own operational health: incident response, on-call sustainability, planning rhythm
  • Migrate ERA processing from Celery to Temporal, define SLAs, improve analysis of low-confidence ERAs

Requirements

  • 3-5+ years of experience as a software engineer with a builder's background
  • Comfortable in design reviews, reads PRs, technically trusted by the team
  • 2+ years managing engineers (as tech lead or engineering manager)
  • Built systems other teams depended on at meaningful scale
  • Clear thinking about failure modes, reliability as a core feature
  • Evaluates where automation, prediction, or AI belongs
  • Gives direct, kind feedback
  • Motivated by mission-driven work

Nice to have

  • Healthcare, insurance, claims, or payments platform experience (revenue cycle, EDI/X12 837/835/277, clearinghouse integrations, ERAs, RARC/CARC handling)
  • Workflow orchestration experience (Temporal or similar), migrating high-volume live pipelines
  • Experience partnering with operations or support teams on scalable tooling
  • Production ML or data-platform fluency
  • Scaleup experience (Series B through D)
