Senior Applied Researcher AI/ML (US)

AI / ML Engineer • Senior • Remote • Full-time Canada US, Canada

As a member of PointClickCare's Advanced Technology / Applied AI Research team, you'll apply machine learning and AI techniques — including GenAI and LLM-based approaches — to solve critical customer and business challenges in healthcare, from framing problems through building and evaluating model systems.

Responsibilities

  • Apply ML/AI techniques including GenAI and LLM-based approaches to build model systems integrated into large-scale cloud SaaS production environments
  • Collaborate with product leaders, clinical informaticists, data scientists, UI/UX researchers and engineers
  • Design, build and evaluate solutions on structured and unstructured healthcare data (predictive models, summarization, recommenders, semantic search, extraction, classification)
  • Perform research and experimentation to select appropriate approaches, algorithms and evaluation methods
  • Perform data collection, cleaning, analysis, prompt tuning, fine-tuning and model training
  • Apply and evolve responsible AI evaluation practices (e.g. LLM-as-judge, RAGAS, LangSmith)

Requirements

  • Ph.D. graduate with 1+ years of related industry experience, OR Master's graduate with 4+ years, including at least 1 year in healthcare ML/AI
  • Proven industry experience through multiple major product releases in a commercial SaaS environment
  • Hands-on experience with healthcare data (EHR, ADT, clinical notes)
  • Proficiency in Python; Java or other languages helpful
  • Proficiency with SQL and data engineering for AI/ML applications
  • Experience with large datasets using big data frameworks (Azure Data Lake, Apache Spark, Databricks)
  • Solid understanding of transformer models and LLM-based approaches, including prompt tuning and PEFT methods (LoRA, QLoRA) using Hugging Face Transformers
  • Experience building and evaluating models with modern ML packages (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, LightGBM)
  • Experience building and deploying models on public cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud), including version control and CI/CD
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills on a distributed team

Nice to have

  • Experience with reinforcement learning or RLHF
  • NLP techniques for summarization, extraction, classification or semantic search
  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and/or agentic frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex)
