Staff Software Engineer, Server Networking Security (Rust)
MongoDB's Server Ingress Security team is rearchitecting the MongoDB Server's ingress networking to make clusters even more secure. The new team is building the Atlas Network Protection layer: performant, security-critical services that harden MongoDB's pre-authentication attack surface and enable rapid response to emergent threats. Staff Engineers are sought as founding members with a crucial role in a multi-year roadmap. The role is based in Dublin under a hybrid working model.
Responsibilities
- ▹Define and drive the technical strategy for Ingress Security with stakeholders across Server, Atlas, SRE and Product Security
- ▹Own the definition, planning and execution of technical plans for ambiguous, high-impact security and networking problems
- ▹Design, implement and operate production-ready security services in Rust, focusing on security, correctness, performance and operational excellence
- ▹Collaborate with Engineering leadership and other Product & Technology teams on roadmaps to improve the security posture of MongoDB's ingress stack
- ▹Advise across the team and organization on engineering complexity, risk and inter-project dependencies
- ▹Handle time-sensitive escalations and production incidents
- ▹Diagnose test failures, identify and fix bugs, performance regressions and other defects
- ▹Interview candidates for software engineering positions and help cultivate the team's talent bench
- ▹Maintain expertise in cutting-edge research on systems security, network security and memory-safe systems programming
Requirements
- ▹10+ years of experience building production-quality systems software with a large user base, robust design structure and rigorous code quality
- ▹Experience with large backend/compiled codebases and performance-sensitive software, preferably in Rust
- ▹Strong systems fundamentals, including multi-threaded programming and performance profiling
- ▹Excellent verbal and written technical communication for audiences from junior engineers to executive stakeholders
- ▹Strong time management skills and ability to realistically assess project complexity
- ▹Interest in the theory and practice of high-availability, security-critical systems
- ▹Based in Dublin for the hybrid working model
Nice to have
- ▹Hands-on experience in security-sensitive or networking-adjacent domains
- ▹Understanding of network protocols, TLS and connection lifecycle management
- ▹Familiarity with security concepts such as attack surface reduction, input validation, memory safety and defense-in-depth architectures
