ClickHouse is looking for exceptional C++ engineers to join its remote-first, global Core Engineering team, specifically the Performance Engineering team that loves optimizing the performance of distributed systems. The role focuses on analyzing and optimizing the core ClickHouse database. The position can be located anywhere ClickHouse has a hiring presence.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Analyze and optimize the performance of the core ClickHouse database as part of the Core Performance team
  • ▹Work on topics such as query optimization, distributed query optimization, relational operators (aggregation and joins), caching, and low-level optimizations like SIMD instructions
  • ▹Ensure database performance does not deteriorate over time by extending existing and adding new performance tests based on real-world or synthetic datasets
  • ▹Serve as a resource for the Support Engineering team, helping debug advanced performance issues encountered by customers
  • ▹Collaborate closely with other core teams to assess the impact of new features on performance and support colleagues with performance tests and advice
  • ▹Work with the open-source community: resolving issues, reviewing and finishing PRs, and answering questions across mail, chats, Google Groups, and Slack channels

Requirements

  • ▹Solid professional software development experience in C++, including experience with Unix systems
  • ▹Strong knowledge of database internals and design
  • ▹Experience in performance engineering, ideally in a database (other areas such as high-frequency trading, simulation, or real-time data processing are also acceptable)
  • ▹Strong communication and the ability to work well within and across engineering teams
  • ▹Readiness to work closely with the open-source community
  • ▹Patient, detail-oriented participation in code reviews
  • ▹Strong problem-solving and solid production debugging skills
  • ▹Passion for efficiency, availability, scalability, and data governance
  • ▹High level of responsibility, ownership, and accountability

Nice to have

  • ▹Experience with ClickHouse
  • ▹Experience in security, privacy, and compliance
  • ▹Experience with TCP/IP and network programming
  • ▹Experience developing cloud infrastructure services, preferably with Kubernetes
  • ▹Experience giving public talks at technical conferences and meetups
