Senior Software Engineer (Inbox Desktop)

Proton's Inbox business unit, a cross-functional team of about 60 people driving Proton Mail and Proton Calendar, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Inbox Desktop team. The team develops the desktop clients of Inbox, specifically the Proton Mail Desktop App, Proton Mail Bridge, and the Export tool, and is rebuilding its client applications on a new technology stack centred around cross-platform Rust code. You would take technical ownership of the Proton Mail Desktop App on Windows and Linux. The team uses Golang, C++, Qt, JS, TypeScript, React, and Electron, with all client code open source under GPL3.

Responsibilities

  • Assess new technologies and support cross-team and cross-business-unit technical decisions
  • Transform product specifications into technical requirements and lead the team to implementation
  • Implement, deploy, and maintain existing and new features for high-quality user experiences
  • Enhance the software development lifecycle, tools, and processes for scalability and developer experience
  • Write clear, concise, and testable code
  • Manage scoping, planning, and execution of new features, technical initiatives, and greenfield projects
  • Mentor team members and foster a culture of learning and accountability

Requirements

  • Significant relevant professional software development experience with Rust, or a very strong background in modern C++ with reasonably complex Rust pet projects
  • Experience developing high-quality, fast, Windows and Linux cross-platform desktop applications
  • Familiarity with native and cross-platform desktop UI frameworks (Avalonia UI, Qt, Electron)
  • Experience working on both user interface and business logic
  • A product mindset with familiarity with key business and product performance metrics
  • Ability to make architectural decisions and contribute to strategic planning and product direction
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a distributed team with excellent written communication
  • Strong problem-solving and remote troubleshooting skills while protecting user privacy
  • Understanding of secure coding practices and a commitment to security and privacy
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

Nice to have

  • Experience with macOS or mobile cross-platform development
  • Familiarity with unidirectional data-flow (Elm-like) frameworks
  • Experience with Grafana, Metabase, or other monitoring platforms
  • Experience in B2B, preferably in online privacy and/or productivity contexts
