Senior Cloud Database Engineer

Responsibilities

• ▹Be part of a 24x7 on-call rotation supporting all services the Database Engineering team owns
• ▹Contribute to the technical vision for database engineering in maintenance and cloud migration of relational and non-relational databases
• ▹Contribute to the design of high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture
• ▹Work on platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and continuous evolution of the database footprint to support business growth
• ▹Keep automation as the primary focus, tightly coupled with design to reduce manual work
• ▹Work with engineers from various teams to execute on short- and long-term technical vision
• ▹Perform root cause analysis, remediation, and documentation to minimize incidents
• ▹Write clear design documents and articulate technical decisions and trade-offs to peers and stakeholders
• ▹Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices using tools like Datadog
• ▹Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team standards

Requirements

• ▹5+ years of experience as a backend engineer and a bachelor's degree (7+ years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree)
• ▹Experience with cloud-native databases (AWS preferred), including transactional RDBMS such as Aurora, MySQL, and Postgres, as well as NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB or MongoDB
• ▹Experience in cloud-based high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems including replication and failover
• ▹Experience with IaC, automation, and orchestration tools (Terraform, AWS Step Function, etc.)
• ▹CI/CD experience: pipelines, job runners, deployment automation
• ▹Solid understanding of database administration: internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics
• ▹Proficient in Python
• ▹Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting
• ▹Experience with monitoring and observability tools, Datadog preferred
• ▹Strong sense of ownership - follows through, raises issues proactively, and takes accountability
• ▹Curious and committed to continuous learning, keeping up with industry trends
• ▹Team-oriented approach, able to work cross-functionally with other teams

Nice to have

• ▹Logical/physical migrations and blue-green switchovers (current strategic work)
• ▹Database fleet management experience
• ▹AI tooling fluency
• ▹Basic Java skills
• ▹Experience with payments or the fintech space
• ▹Experience with ProxySQL and/or RDS Proxy
