Infrastructure Engineer

As an Infrastructure Engineer at Railway, directly responsible for building the infrastructure that powers the Railway engine, exposing the knobs and capabilities that let users build their wildest ideas.

Stack

Responsibilities

  • Build system-level software from scratch, since Railway's challenges aren't the usual kube-fits-all variety
  • Develop a strong understanding of OS-level primitives: CPU, memory, network, and the kernel
  • Balance distributed systems thinking with simplicity (know when to reach for RAFT vs. Postgres)
  • Build Golang/Rust gRPC services from scratch to expose complex capabilities in a scalable, performant way
  • High impact, high agency role with direct effect on company culture and trajectory
  • Occasional on-call participation

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, enjoys building fault tolerant, resilient, scalable services
  • Good intuition about how long solutions will last (startups can hope for 12-18 months, 2-3 orders of magnitude)
  • Tact to implement solutions, build monitors for error boundaries, and document requirements
  • Great sense of direction and prioritization amid early-stage startup ambiguity
  • Grit to dive into a problem, implement, scale, and replace a solution when needed
  • Great communication skills for conveying your point, solution, and beyond
