Forto is looking for a Director of Data to create a unified data organization spanning Data Science, Data Analytics, and Data Engineering. The role owns and implements a company-wide data strategy, raises the profile of data across the business, and manages governance, compliance, and the data platform. It is a senior leadership position in a high-growth logistics company that uses AI to reinvent digital supply chains.

- ▹Lead the three data pillars (Engineering, Analytics, Science), each with its own manager, into a unified organization while respecting specialized skills
- ▹Run the data organization as a Centre of Excellence, supporting and educating data consumers across the business
- ▹Define and shape a data strategy fit for analytical and agentic business needs
- ▹Own data governance and quality: establish policies, standards, ownership models, and forums that make data trustworthy
- ▹Manage day-to-day GDPR and emerging AI-regulation compliance, setting practical guardrails for data and AI use
- ▹Sponsor the data platform across ingestion, storage, transformation, BI, and ML; make build/buy/partner recommendations and manage vendors
- ▹Scale analytics and AI capability; curate a portfolio balancing quick wins, strategic bets, and long-term capability
- ▹Partner across the business, translating technical choices into commercial language and resolving cross-functional disputes
Requirements
- ▹7+ years in data, analytics, or related disciplines, including 3+ years leading teams spanning more than one sub-discipline
- ▹Track record of shaping and delivering a data strategy for a business
- ▹Centre of Excellence or shared-services exposure: service model, hub-and-spoke design, intake and prioritisation
- ▹Strong knowledge of warehouse/lakehouse patterns, streaming, orchestration, BI, and the basics of GenAI
- ▹Cloud platform fluency (AWS / GCP / Azure) sufficient to challenge decisions
- ▹Hands-on accountability for data governance, quality, and regulatory compliance (GDPR at minimum)
- ▹Experience supporting GenAI use cases and setting a productisation strategy
- ▹Proven ability to partner with department heads and VP-level leaders
- ▹Commercial fluency: owning and defending a budget, building business cases, managing vendors
- ▹People leadership: hiring, developing, and retaining managers and senior ICs
- ▹Strong written and verbal communication across strategy documents, leadership updates, and engineer working sessions
Nice to have
- ▹Experience in a high-growth or scale-up environment where the data function had to be built or reshaped
- ▹Background in industries with operational complexity, real-time data, or supply chain / logistics / marketplace dynamics
- ▹Hands-on past as a data engineer, analytics engineer, or data scientist
- ▹Experience implementing a data mesh or federated data product model
- ▹Familiarity with the EU AI Act and emerging AI governance frameworks
- ▹Experience evaluating, procuring, and rolling out AI tooling (LLMs, coding assistants, analytics copilots) at scale
- ▹Track record of public technical discourse (talks, writing, open source)
- ▹Graduate qualification in a quantitative, computer science, or related discipline
- ▹Experience operating across European or global teams
