Senior Engineering Manager, Non-Linear Productivity

Backend Developer • On-site • Full-time • 📍 Remote +4

GitLab is hiring for a 0-to-1 team-building mandate: leading a small, hand-picked engineering team that finds and fixes the highest-leverage friction points in GitLab's own SDLC.

Responsibilities

  • Define and continuously refine the operating model for the non-linear productivity pilot
  • Identify and prioritize high-leverage productivity opportunities across the SDLC (flaky tests, review latency, pipeline reliability, tooling gaps)
  • Translate a broad, ambiguous mandate into a concrete, time-boxed roadmap for a 3-month pilot window
  • Personally source, evaluate, and select 4 exceptional engineers for the pilot squad
  • Negotiate allocation models with each engineer's current engineering manager
  • Set the technical direction and working norms for a small, fast-moving team
  • Mentor the engineers on the team in root-cause diagnosis and shift-left thinking
  • Lead hands-on investigation to instrument and baseline the three top-level metrics (MRPM, pipeline success rate, pipeline latency)
