Sr Software Engineer, Build

Backend Developer • On-site • Full-time • 📍 Seattle

A hands-on, senior individual-contributor role in BlackSky's Satellite Embedded Software Group, owning the end-to-end build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and internal tool integration, reporting to the Director of Flight Software.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and manage build systems, CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based infrastructure such as AWS
  • Drive work to timely completion using task management tools like Jira in an Agile-like environment; participate in and lead status meetings, standups, and sprint planning
  • Collaborate with other ESG software team members and cross-functional engineers to deliver mission-critical software infrastructure and tools on time and to a high standard
  • Ensure adequate documentation, test, inspection and analysis are performed to verify compliance with requirements and other goals
  • Provide feedback on and participate in flight software design, development, unit testing and release processes
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • At least six (6) years of experience delivering and maintaining commercial/embedded software in a production environment
  • Expertise in writing clean, maintainable Python and Bash code
  • Experience with version control and continuous integration
  • Expertise with developer tool chains, build tools and pipelines such as Git, GitLab, GitLab CI, Jenkins, JIRA
  • Expertise with Linux toolchains and environments (GNU toolchain, QEMU, Buildroot, Yocto)
  • Experience working in an Agile/SCRUM environment
  • Proven track record of delivering products on time and on budget
  • Excellent root cause analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work across teams and skill sets in a diverse environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • May require US citizenship due to program requirements

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field
  • Comfortable interfacing with physical hardware
  • Knowledge of FPGA (Verilog, HDL) build tools and environments
  • Working knowledge of hardware interfaces (e.g. GPIO, I2C, PHY, RS-422) or high-speed interfaces (e.g. 10G Ethernet)
  • Experience with real-time, fault-tolerant systems
  • Familiarity with C/C++ or Rust
