Senior Software Engineer, Platform

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 New York City

On the Platform Engineering team, you'll help design, build, test, and deploy Astronomer's production infrastructure, directly shaping the Astro, Observe, and IDE products.

Responsibilities

  • Make high-quality, data- and experience-driven decisions on building the current and next generation of the production platform, then deliver the results
  • Own and build how code is tested, built, and deployed in a high-scale PaaS environment
  • Collaborate across the company on production system design, standards, and technology choices
  • Deliver results predictably, safely, and reliably, even while "changing the wheels on the bus while it's moving"
  • Be at the forefront of how the Platform Engineering team works together
  • Create and maintain comprehensive internal documentation for systems and processes
  • Participate in incident management and determine sensible practices as the platform evolves

Requirements

  • Strong experience in Non-Abstract Systems design and implementation
  • Strong proficiency in Python and Golang, with in-depth Kubernetes experience (CKA or equivalent or greater)
  • Experience with observability principles and technologies, including SLI/SLO definition and tracking
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with experience delivering in a globally distributed team
  • A passion for reliability and operational excellence
  • A low tolerance for toil and unnecessary friction
  • Ability to estimate the scope of work accurately and coordinate with stakeholders on risk
  • Experience with (and ideally strong opinions on) software development best practices: code review, testing, CI/CD, version control, automation, debugging
  • Proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues, with ownership and accountability

Nice to have

  • Experience working on a SaaS/PaaS product across multiple cloud providers
  • Experience with the specific tech stack: CircleCI, Chronosphere (Prometheus), Splunk, Bazel, Istio, Playwright, Karpenter, GitHub Actions
  • Deep knowledge of the innards and quirks of AWS, GCP, and particularly Azure
  • Prior participation in an on-call rotation
  • Experience with Apache Airflow
