Protection Scientist Engineer, Integrity

Backend Developer • On-site • Full-time • 📍 San Francisco

Interdisciplinary Protection Scientist Engineer role on OpenAI's Integrity and Investigations team, combining data science, machine learning, and investigative work to detect and combat abuse of OpenAI's products.

Responsibilities

  • Scope and implement abuse monitoring requirements for new product launches
  • Improve and automate processes that sustain monitoring for existing products
  • Prototype and mature detection, review, and enforcement systems for major harms
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Policy, Ops, Investigative and Engineering teams
  • Investigate and respond to critical escalations, including sensitive content
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for urgent escalations

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience in technical analysis and detection, especially using SQL and Python
  • Experience in trust and safety or close collaboration with policy, enforcement and engineering teams
  • Basic data engineering experience, e.g. building core tables or production data pipelines
  • Understanding of machine learning principles and execution
  • An investigative mindset

Nice to have

  • Basic software development skills, since the role involves writing productionized code
  • Experience scaling and automating processes, especially with language models
