Member of Technical Staff, Post-Training

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 London

Cohere is looking for a Member of Technical Staff to advance the state of the art in model post-training, shipping SOTA models to production and bridging research and production with one of the highest compute-to-engineer ratios in the industry.

Responsibilities

  • Design and write high-performant, scalable software for training models
  • Consistently post-train models to reach state-of-the-art performance
  • Coordinate with specialist teams (Agentic, Code, etc.) to produce models with strong all-round performance
  • Craft and implement techniques to improve training cycle performance, on both SFT and RL regimes
  • Research, implement and experiment with ideas on the supercompute and data infrastructure

Requirements

  • Extremely strong software engineering skills
  • Proficiency in Python and ML frameworks such as JAX, PyTorch and XLA/MLIR
  • Experience with distributed training infrastructures (Kubernetes, Slurm) and frameworks such as Ray
  • Experience using large-scale distributed training strategies
  • Hands-on experience training large models at scale
  • Hands-on experience with the post-training phase of model training, with a strong emphasis on performance optimisation

Nice to have

  • Paper at top-tier venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AIStats, MLSys, JMLR, AAAI, Nature, COLING, ACL, EMNLP

Soft skills

Willingness to learn from leading researchersComfortable blending research and production engineeringStrong ownership and initiative
