We're looking to strengthen our software development team!

Backend Developer • On-site • Full-time • 📍 Norderstedt

A senior Linux developer is sought to take ownership of OpenWRT-based firmware for industrial routers, working in C (and eventually Rust) at a small, owner-led German company.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture, development and maintenance of the OpenWRT-based router firmware
  • Develop and maintain system services in C (eventually also Rust) — network daemons, VPN integration (IPsec, WireGuard, OpenVPN), mobile network management (LTE/5G)
  • Work directly on the hardware: kernel configuration, driver integration, debugging via serial console and log analysis
  • Improve build processes, CI/CD pipelines and release workflows
  • Develop concepts for new features together with hardware development and product management
  • Make technical decisions and set quality standards for the software stack

Requirements

  • Several years of experience in Linux systems programming in C
  • Confident with OpenWRT, Buildroot or Yocto — you know how a Linux image is built
  • Solid understanding of network stacks: TCP/IP, routing, NAT, iptables/nftables
  • Experience with cross-compilation, Makefiles, shell scripting
  • Daily use of Git
  • Fluent German (working language)

Nice to have

  • Experience with Rust in systems programming
  • Knowledge of VPN protocols and their implementation
  • Experience with mobile modems (AT commands, QMI)
  • Hands-on hardware debugging
  • Python for tooling, test automation or scripting
  • Degree in computer science (or equivalent professional experience)

Soft skills

Independent, structured way of workingOwnership mindset

What we offer

  • Full ownership of the entire software stack — from idea to firmware running on the device
  • Real hardware on your desk — no developing against simulators
  • Short decision paths — small team, direct line to management and hardware development
  • Permanent contract with a salary in the €60,000–70,000 range
  • Flexible working hours
  • Good transport connections, free parking
