C++/Rust Graphics and Windowing System Software Engineer - Mir

Canonical is hiring a software engineer to build Mir, a high-performance technology stack for window managers and display subsystems behind products like Ubuntu Frame. The role spans design, development and testing of features across the Mir stack, with most code in C++ and Rust adopted as an evolutionary step. It is a fully remote position based in the EMEA or APAC region, open at various career levels.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement features across the Mir stack
  • Assist in debugging, tracking down and fixing issues
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews
  • Create and improve tests and performance benchmarks to catch issues early
  • Create and maintain documentation to enhance the developer experience
  • Engage with the open source community and commercial partners

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM or similar
  • At least 2 years of industry/working experience
  • Excellent modern C++ programming skills
  • Excellent Rust programming skills
  • Familiarity with Linux as a development and deployment platform
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks

Nice to have

  • Experience building window compositing systems
  • Graphics device experience
