Lead Backend Engineer

Zego is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to act as a technical leader shaping the future of its microservices ecosystem within the insurance platform, while mentoring the wider engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple engineers within a team or workstream, guiding their work to deliver user value and business opportunities
  • Design, build and own secure, observable, scalable Python microservices that power the insurance platform
  • Drive architectural discussions and decisions across multiple teams
  • Champion engineering excellence: testability, reliability, scalability and clean code
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers and data analysts to deliver user and business value fast
  • Lead and coordinate delivery of large, complex technical initiatives
  • Actively coach and mentor engineers
  • Identify problems, investigate root causes and implement pragmatic solutions with autonomy
  • Continuously improve team ways of working, from CI/CD pipelines to incident response
  • Stay curious about how AI can enhance productivity and workflows

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering background building cloud-native microservices (Python preferred, but open to strong experience in other languages)
  • Deep knowledge of programming fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system design
  • Experience building systems at scale: distributed architectures, performance tuning, observability
  • Leads by example through mentoring, clear communication and a collaborative mindset
  • Tenacious and resourceful in the face of ambiguity or tough technical challenges
  • Strives for simplicity, building systems that are easy to understand, test and maintain
  • Proactive by nature, raising concerns early and engaging the right people
