Consultant, Data Visualization & Communications Strategy

At BME Strategies, this role builds dashboards, visualizations, and communication materials for Metrik, Massachusetts' local public health data solution, for government stakeholders. The position blends business intelligence (Tableau/Power BI) with communications strategy and creative design.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on data communication and visualization strategy
  • Lead/support client discovery sessions to understand goals, audiences, and data needs
  • Facilitate presentations, stakeholder discussions, and refinement sessions
  • Develop tailored communications and reporting strategies
  • Build dashboards, charts, interactive reports, and analytical products against approved indicators
  • Translate technical, policy-heavy content into clear, visually compelling materials
  • Implement indicator/metric logic in visualization platforms (calculations, formatting, interactivity)
  • Configure and maintain BI semantic layer/modeling artifacts (Tableau data sources, Power BI models)
  • Improve dashboard performance, usability, and maintainability
  • Support QA activities: validating filters, exports, calculations
  • Develop creative deliverables: reports, infographics, presentations, digital media
  • Develop reusable templates, visualization components, and communication assets
  • Track metrics to assess dashboard effectiveness and communication performance

Requirements

  • 4-6 years of experience, including 2+ years in an Associate-level role in a similar consulting environment
  • 1-4 years of client-facing work experience
  • Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Data Analytics, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience building dashboards, analytical products, and audience-centered communications
  • Strong Tableau and/or Power BI proficiency, including custom visualizations
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling, information design, and UX principles
  • Ability to translate complex technical/policy content into engaging materials
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Experience in structured project delivery environments (Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, Teams)

Nice to have

  • Public health experience; familiarity with public health datasets and indicators
  • Experience using SQL and cloud-based analytics platforms (e.g. Snowflake)
  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and tools like Google Workspace, Canva, Figma
  • Experience supporting iterative stakeholder review cycles
  • Understanding of accessibility and equity-centered communications practices
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
