Backend Engineer (Ruby), AI Engineering: Agent Observability

Stack

Responsibilities

• ▹Develop, ship, and maintain Agent Observability and Interactions features across the GitLab monolith backend and the AI gateway, securely and with strong test coverage
• ▹Collaborate with Product Management, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements
• ▹Design, implement, and review GraphQL, REST APIs, and related backend logic
• ▹Improve and extend automated testing, including RSpec, to strengthen quality and feedback loops
• ▹Share standards and learnings with other engineers, raising the bar for responsible AI integration
• ▹Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshooting production issues and contributing to root cause analysis

Requirements

• ▹Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models
• ▹Comfortable working across the stack in a mature codebase
• ▹Proficiency designing or extending REST and/or GraphQL APIs with attention to scalability and backward compatibility
• ▹Strong practical experience working with AI tooling on a daily basis
• ▹SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
• ▹Openness to learning and collaborating in an async-first, distributed team
• ▹Clear written and verbal communication, including technical proposals and documentation

Nice to have

• ▹Familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends
• ▹Experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features and integrations

About the company

Agent Observability is a new functional team within GitLab's Agent Execution group (initially 3 engineers across AMER/EMEA, 8+ engineers in the wider group), aiming to make the Duo Agent Platform the backbone of many AI features at GitLab.
