
Staff Engineer
MongoDB is seeking a Staff Engineer to design, build and operate the internal and external observability stack for the MongoDB platform, on which tens of thousands of customers rely to monitor their database clusters and generate actionable alerts. The systems handle tens of billions of metric time series while processing petabytes of logs, traces and events. The stack includes VictoriaMetrics, Splunk, Flink, WarpStream/Kafka, Java, Golang and Fluentbit. This is a hybrid role based in Cork.
Responsibilities
- ▹Build and architect systems for the mission-critical observability platform, leading the architecture and implementation of components that drive performance, scalability, cost-efficiency and resiliency
- ▹Design and implement observability improvements that help engineers and customers quickly diagnose the root cause of production issues
- ▹Handle production customer escalations from the Technical Support team and coach teammates to do the same
- ▹Write production-ready code, improve existing code and mentor the team to write higher-quality code
- ▹Own areas of code maintained by the Observability Team, ensuring high standards of security, durability, availability, performance and maintainability
- ▹Diagnose test failures, identify and fix bugs, and prevent regressions
- ▹Investigate the performance impact of code changes
- ▹Interview candidates for advanced software engineering positions
- ▹Lead development and project management of some of the larger cross-company projects
- ▹Collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams, and advise Product Management on technical direction and roadmaps
- ▹Champion and improve unit and integration tests, and join the on-call rotation
Requirements
- ▹Minimum 10 years of experience designing, programming, debugging and tuning distributed and/or highly concurrent C/C++/Java/Rust mission-critical software systems
- ▹Experience running latency-sensitive, high-throughput systems
- ▹Strong systems fundamentals, including multi-threaded programming, performance profiling and expert-level programming
- ▹Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and a strong desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor engineers
- ▹Excellent time and project management skills, including realistic assessment of project cost and complexity
- ▹A good understanding of information security management
- ▹Based in Cork for the hybrid working model

- ▹Familiarity with database internals or building core components for data processing systems
- ▹Indexing or database performance tuning experience
- ▹Familiarity with the observability ecosystem and best practices
