Senior Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

• ▹Design, develop and maintain clean, efficient, secure and well-tested code for critical business needs, ensuring scalability, performance and reliability across Teya's systems
• ▹Take ownership of features and projects throughout the full software development lifecycle: scoping, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance
• ▹Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (product, design, data science, security and operations), provide technical insights and contribute to architecture discussions
• ▹Build tools and integrate systems to improve operational efficiency, reliability and scalability of products
• ▹Contribute to process improvements, focusing on continuous integration, delivery and deployment
• ▹Participate in code reviews, give constructive feedback and help raise the quality of the team's output
• ▹Mentor and support fellow developers
• ▹Stay up to date with the latest trends in software engineering, payments and fintech, and identify opportunities for improvement
• ▹Help troubleshoot complex system issues to ensure uninterrupted service for customers
• ▹Help define and promote best practices in code quality, testing, automation and security
• ▹Serve as a subject matter expert in key areas, guiding and supporting other teams

Requirements

• ▹At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience
• ▹Strong experience building backend systems with Java 17+ and Spring Boot
• ▹Proven ability to design, build and operate reliable services in production
• ▹Experience with system design, scalable architectures, microservices and API development
• ▹Strong understanding of databases, data structures, performance trade-offs and distributed systems
• ▹Practical experience with Kafka and event-driven systems
• ▹Strong focus on monitoring, observability, testing and operational ownership
• ▹Experience debugging complex issues across multiple services or systems
• ▹Ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions and become productive quickly
• ▹Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics and influence technical direction
• ▹Collaborative approach and interest in supporting the growth of other engineers
• ▹Experience working in an Agile or Scrum environment

Nice to have

• ▹Degree in computer science, engineering or a related field
• ▹Previous experience in the payments industry, fintech or location and business recommendation services platforms
• ▹Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes, Helm)
• ▹Experience with frameworks, SDKs, APIs and libraries relevant to Teya's technology stack (e.g. Laravel, Spring, Reactor)
• ▹Familiarity with authorisation systems (e.g. RBAC, ABAC, SpiceDB)
• ▹Experience with Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) or Test-Driven Development (TDD)
• ▹Experience with CI/CD pipelines
