Senior Backend Engineer (Go)

Responsibilities

• ▹Own a domain inside the core Go codebase, contributing to architecture decisions and code quality within your area
• ▹Work inside a well-structured system with some standalone services around the edges, including an on-premise gateway for hospital integrations, rather than a sprawling microservices estate
• ▹Step in and keep things moving when your lead is away, taking ownership with confidence rather than waiting for instruction
• ▹Contribute to pull requests, reviews and technical discussions as a trusted senior voice on your team
• ▹Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies and suggest or implement improvements
• ▹Support and mentor other engineers without needing to manage a team
• ▹Work closely with product and design to translate business needs into technical solutions, and communicate technical progress, risks and trade-offs clearly
• ▹Ship reliably against the team's roadmap, help break down features into deliverable tasks, and remove blockers
• ▹Use AI tooling as a genuine part of your day to day, whether accelerating how you write and review code or prototyping ideas faster
• ▹Work on non-business tasks: continuously optimising backend code, analysing and improving database slowdowns, internal automation, and building performance profiling tools

Requirements

• ▹Experienced developer: CS degree or equivalent knowledge, and 4 to 5+ years coding full time professionally
• ▹Production experience in Golang, or another C-family language, with a real, demonstrable ability to operate in Go without hand-holding
• ▹Some experience supporting or mentoring other engineers, and a wish for a strong individual contributor role rather than a path into people management
• ▹Desire to become a technical owner of part of the codebase, taking responsibility without managing a team
• ▹Clear, confident communication, comfortable being put on the spot and able to think out loud rather than defaulting to async-only communication
• ▹Good writing skills for a fully remote Product and Engineering setup: written questions, requirements and docs
• ▹Comfort and excitement diving into more advanced topics, for example build pipelines, caching mechanisms and database optimisation
• ▹Experience with CI and testing frameworks, since the small team wants to automate a lot
• ▹Proactive and proficient across the entire product development flow: asking questions, clarifying specs, raising doubts and engaging in meetings
• ▹Genuine excitement about what AI can do for engineering, with curiosity and a real point of view on where it is heading (not every line needs to be AI generated)

Nice to have

• ▹Healthcare experience (a bonus, not a requirement)
• ▹FHIR, HL7 or DICOM exposure
