Backend Engineer - Europe/UK Timezone

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 Remote (EMEA)

PostHog is hiring a backend engineer for its feature flags evaluation service, a high-throughput, low-latency system that sits in the critical path of every customer's app. The role is fully remote within European time zones and centres on owning whole services and setting their latency and uptime targets. Correctness and tail latency matter equally here.

Responsibilities

  • Own the feature flag tools, SDKs, evaluation services, and in-app UI end to end
  • Maintain the reliability, stability, and performance of the targeting service and local evaluation endpoints
  • Build real-time cohorts so membership can be evaluated at flag-check time
  • Move from a read-heavy to a write-heavy architecture, including a dedicated store for flag evaluation
  • Help build an AI-first flag management tool that agents can use without opening the UI
  • Lower p50/p90/p99 latencies and isolate the evaluation path from upstream failures (load shedding, request hedging)
  • Make architecture calls and port performance-critical code such as cache building to Rust

Requirements

  • Built and operated systems handling high volumes of requests or data (millions+ per minute)
  • Care for tail latency, caching, and distributed-systems failure modes
  • Productive in Rust and Python, or confident you will get there fast
  • Work independently: pick a sensible architecture, ship it fast, and drive it to done without being managed
  • Ship changes quickly without breaking a service customers depend on
  • Based in a European time zone

Nice to have

  • Experience with feature flags, customer data platforms, or other real-time decision engines
  • Have carried a pager and dealt with incidents
  • Comfortable provisioning and maintaining cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with benchmarking and profiling tools

Soft skills

Strong sense of ownership and autonomyComfortable with async communication (PRs over Issues over Slack)Ambitious and motivated by high-responsibility, high-impact work
