Software Engineering Manager – Container and Virtualisation Infrastructure

Canonical's mission is to build a next-generation private cloud infrastructure, combining KVM, Ceph and SDN technologies to create a data-center-scale cloud that 'just works' for edge and core enterprise deployments. The company is hiring engineering managers with experience in high-quality microservice architectures and high-performance team leadership, plus deep familiarity with the Linux kernel, virtualisation, storage and networking. LXD components span the full software stack from low-level kernel features to the management API/CLI. As an engineering manager your main responsibility is to run an effective team and develop the colleagues you manage while maintaining a solid technical background. The role is remote, available in EMEA and the Americas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of remote engineers
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback and hands-on career development
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders
  • Advocate and advance modern software development practices
  • Participate in the engineering process through code and architectural review
  • Engage with teams at Canonical, the open source community and partners
  • Work from home with global travel of 4 to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events

Requirements

  • Understanding of modern Linux cloud computing technologies including networking, storage, containers and Kubernetes
  • Strong track record of developing and growing people
  • Focus on success and delivery of timely, high-quality software
  • Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or a similar degree
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
  • Experience programming in C and/or Go
  • Technical leadership experience and a software engineering background
