Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Canonical is hiring a Senior, Staff or Lead Engineer to join the Launchpad team, the platform for managing open-source development projects that powers code hosting, review, bug tracking, package building and translations used by projects like Ubuntu. As a senior engineer passionate about Linux, web services and scalable platforms, you will architect and refine a mature, Python-driven system. You will maintain business-critical services while driving innovation in package building, developer workflows and the web UI. This is a remote role based in the EMEA region.

Responsibilities

  • Influence and drive design, architecture and feature decisions across distributed teams
  • Craft exceptional, API-first Python code with unit tests for robust, scalable systems
  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical challenges with high-quality fixes for performance and reliability
  • Mentor and uplift fellow engineers, leading code reviews that reinforce best practices
  • Travel internationally two to four times a year for internal discussions and external events

Requirements

  • Proven technical excellence in Python development and delivering production-ready code
  • Expertise in maintaining and improving large-scale web applications and database management
  • Deep understanding of integration, infrastructure and operations in distributed environments
  • A security-focused mindset throughout development
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu as a development and deployment platform
  • Solid grasp of software packaging systems, including Debian/Ubuntu packages
  • A Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or a similar degree

  • Experience with PostgreSQL
