Senior Java Engineer - Distributed Systems - Elasticsearch
Elastic, the Search AI Company, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Distributed Systems team, focusing on how Elasticsearch delivers scale, performance, and resilience. The team owns how nodes in an Elasticsearch cluster communicate and how data is indexed, allocated, and replicated across nodes. The role involves working on complex, highly distributed systems and owning projects from technical design through implementation.

Responsibilities
- ▹Improve Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines
- ▹Maintain the cluster coordination system to keep performance high as nodes join and leave and data moves around, while preserving the safety and liveness properties of the whole system
- ▹Push the limits on the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes that Elasticsearch can handle
- ▹Investigate all kinds of issues, including performance and concurrency problems, and propose solutions
- ▹Support the support engineers with the harder problems
Requirements
- ▹Strong background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms
- ▹Strong skills in core Java, fluent with the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs as well as newer language features
- ▹Deep technical proficiency in algorithms
- ▹Proven ability to understand and work on complex, highly distributed systems
- ▹Ability to build and debug features with broad impact running on multiple machines
- ▹Ability to own projects from beginning to end, covering both technical design and collaboration with others
Nice to have
- ▹Experience with data stores
- ▹Experience with search, analytics, and Lucene
- ▹Strong knowledge of the JDK
- ▹Experience with asynchronous event-driven network frameworks such as Netty
