Engineering Manager, Platform

Backend Developer • Lead • Remote • Full-time • 📍 Remote (US)

Knock, a remote-first (with a NYC base) Series A startup of 20+ employees, is hiring its first engineering manager to lead its small but growing platform team, which builds, scales, and maintains the core services and infrastructure that run Knock. The role reports directly to the CTO with high ownership over the platform team's roadmap, people, and operations. Fully remote (US).

Responsibilities

  • Hire and build a high-performing platform team over the next year, growing it by 2-4 additional ICs
  • Own the platform team's roadmap and prioritization, balancing platform investments (reliability, scalability, developer experience) against feature delivery
  • Coach and develop engineers through regular 1-on-1s, stretch projects, and consequential decisions
  • Contribute to architecture decisions and design reviews, and write code strategically to unblock critical paths and set standards
  • Lead and participate in incident response: debugging production issues, running postmortems, and driving reliability improvements
  • Partner with the product engineering team to manage cross-team dependencies, establish support models, and define SLAs and metrics
  • Help shape Knock's broader engineering culture, standards, and tooling choices alongside the CTO

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as an engineering manager in a startup or mid-sized company, leading a platform or infrastructure team that operates at scale
  • Strong technical foundations to own a deeply technical area and make strong technical contributions when needed
  • Track record of hiring, growing, and retaining excellent engineers and building team cultures where people do their best work
  • Judgment to delegate decisions to the team and instincts to know when to step in
  • Comfort owning prioritization without a dedicated Product Manager partner
  • Experience leading on-call rotations, incident response, and operating a high-availability service
  • Experience with fast-growing, well-structured engineering organizations without following them as dogma
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fully distributed, remote-first team
