Software Engineer - Support (USA Only - 100% Remote)

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 Remote (US)

Close has been building a communication-first CRM since 2013 and is a bootstrapped, profitable, 120-person, fully remote company. This role hires a Software Engineer embedded in the Support function to build the tools and AI systems the Support team runs on. As ticket volume grows and AI reshapes good support, the engineer decides which parts of the support workflow to automate and ships those decisions, working directly with the Support team and other Support Engineers. The role reports to the Director of Support and requires being located in US time zones (ET, CT, MT, PT).

Responsibilities

  • Build internal tools that scale Support: AI drafting tools, autonomous reply systems, workflow automation, reporting dashboards and anything else that removes friction
  • Own projects end to end, working closely with the Support team to understand what to build, then building it without a PM intermediary
  • Ship customer-facing tools that take work off the queue, such as self-service migration scripts and diagnostic tools customers can run themselves
  • Collaborate closely with Support, whose Reps and Engineers are the primary users and best source of requirements
  • Improve the systems underneath the work with better abstractions and more reliable integrations across Close, Stripe, Twilio and the rest of the stack
  • Experiment and ship, prototyping, measuring and shipping better approaches

Requirements

  • 3+ years of Software Engineering experience, writing clean, production-quality code
  • A degree or rigorous experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Technically deep: fluent in Python, Rust, Go or TypeScript/JavaScript, and have built information retrieval systems using semantic search / RAG
  • A systems thinker who fixes manual processes and considers upstream and downstream consequences
  • AI-fluent, not AI-dependent: use Claude, Codex, Pi or similar tools while understanding the code and debugging it from first principles
  • A clear, async communicator with readable specs, well-documented PRs and clear Slack messages, thriving in a fully remote, async-first environment
  • Comfortable with autonomy, scoping your own work and priorities without heavy oversight
  • Located in US time zones (ET, CT, MT or PT)
