Site Reliability Engineer (USA Only - 100% Remote)

Backend Developer • Remote • Full-time • 📍 Remote (US)

Close has been building a communication-first CRM since 2013 and is a bootstrapped, profitable, 120-person, fully remote company. This SRE role runs the platform every other system at Close depends on: multi-terabyte MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch clusters, multiple Kubernetes clusters running tens of thousands of pods, and telemetry on Grafana's LGTM stack and ClickHouse processing over 130 TB a month, serving AI in production for 11,000 paying customers with no scheduled downtime in 4 years. The infrastructure runs on AWS (EKS, MSK, RDS, ElastiCache, EC2) with Docker-based CI/CD and is heavily automated with Terraform and Ansible. The role requires being based in the USA (ET, CT, MT, PT).

Responsibilities

  • Automate the databases' full lifecycle: provisioning, scaling, failover and retirement of multi-terabyte MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch, handled by the platform instead of by hand
  • Drive static credentials out of the system, moving toward short-lived, identity-based auth across services and infrastructure
  • Push downtime and disruption to new lows for maintenance, deploys and disaster recovery that customers never feel
  • Harden multi-region disaster recovery to make failover faster, more automatic and more trustworthy
  • Own the telemetry and CI/CD backbone: the Grafana LGTM + ClickHouse pipeline processing 130 TB a month, and the GitHub Actions + ArgoCD path

Requirements

  • Senior or Staff level: Senior 1 & 2 candidates have 5+ years building modern infrastructure systems; Staff candidates have 8+ years
  • Fluent across the infrastructure stack: CI/CD (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD), configuration management (Ansible, Terraform), databases (Elasticsearch, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse), cloud (Kubernetes, AWS) and telemetry (Loki, Tempo, Grafana, Mimir/Prometheus, OTEL)
  • Build robust systems from quality components, valuing simplicity over familiarity and resilience over speed
  • Be the final point of escalation and last line of support for mission-critical production systems
  • Strong grasp of common networking and data transfer protocols like DNS, HTTP and TCP
  • Use AI tools in your day-to-day workflow
  • Battle-tested: carried the pager for something with real customer impact, debugged incidents off-runbook, or come through a successful disaster response
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, fully distributed team, managing time well and communicating clearly in English
  • Based in the USA (ET, CT, MT, PT)
