Railway's mission is to make software engineers higher leverage by giving them powerful tools, aiming to be an all-encompassing infrastructure solution. This observability role sits under the platform engineering umbrella and involves a lot of non-networking platform work as well. You will build the ingestion, alerting and API systems that give users instant insight into their applications at very high scale. Railway is a globally distributed startup of around 21 people serving hundreds of thousands of users. This is a global remote role.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Build ingestion pipelines to consume 1M+ RPS streams of logs, metrics and other telemetry
  • ▹Build scalable, fault-tolerant alerting engines for real-time notification of threshold breaches
  • ▹Craft rich backend observability APIs, working with product to build great experiences
  • ▹Provide APIs to access realtime log/metrics streams for the Dashboard and Product teams
  • ▹Build Golang/Rust gRPC services from scratch supporting tens of thousands of users and the millions to come
  • ▹Define immutable infrastructure that can be torn down, failed over and reconstituted using Terraform and Ansible
  • ▹Write Engineering Requirement Documents to take work from idea to implementation and success monitoring
  • ▹Interface with the TypeScript and GraphQL edge to expose microservice APIs for internal and potentially external consumption

Requirements

  • ▹Strong understanding of distributed systems, enjoying building fault-tolerant, resilient and scalable services
  • ▹Solid intuition about how long solutions will last
  • ▹Ability to implement a solution, create monitors for its error boundaries and document requirements for when you are not around
  • ▹Strong sense of direction and prioritization when dealing with the ambiguity of an early-stage startup
  • ▹Grit to dive into a problem, implement, scale and replace a solution when needed
  • ▹Strong communication skills for getting your point across and your solution implemented

Nice to have

  • ▹Interest in VictoriaMetrics, ClickHouse and other systems for building observability stacks from the ground up
