A Director of Payments Engineering role leading the Global Payments Tribe at HelloFresh, responsible for gathering payment details and processing payments for the subscription business serving 8.5+ million active customers. The role leads engineering teams and Staff Engineers across the payments domains and owns payments architecture strategy and long-term vision.
Responsibilities
- ▹Lead three engineering squads of 20-25 engineers, managing Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers across Warsaw and Berlin
- ▹Own the GenAI transformation of the Payments Tribe, driving an AI-native roadmap from AI-assisted development and automated incident response to agentic workflows and LLM-powered tooling
- ▹Own the availability and reliability of payment infrastructure, driving SRE practices, incident management, SLOs/SLIs and on-call maturity
- ▹Set technical direction across Golang, Kotlin, PostgreSQL, Kafka, React and React Native services on AWS, ensuring regulatory and compliance requirements are met
- ▹Partner with Product, Finance, the Growth tribe and payment service providers to align engineering priorities with business outcomes
- ▹Manage, coach and develop Engineering Managers and navigate organisational change while keeping teams focused and motivated
Requirements
- ▹10+ years in software engineering with 4+ years in management/leadership at scale
- ▹Deep technical expertise relevant to Payments: payment processing, gateway services, batch transaction processing, payment reporting, database systems, distributed computing, backend frameworks
- ▹Hands-on familiarity with Golang, Kotlin, PostgreSQL, Kafka and AWS
- ▹AI proficiency and advocacy, with a demonstrable track record of championing AI adoption
- ▹Systems thinking to design scalable, resilient solutions in a high-throughput environment where downtime means direct revenue loss
